The community of South Park, Kansas was founded in 1887. In 1888, the community built the Walker School, a one-room school. In 1912, another school was built for white children to attend while Black children continued to learn at Walker. By the late 1940s, Walker had two rooms and was horribly rundown. It only had an outhouse restroom and the school was tough to keep heated during the cold winter months. South Park issued a bond to build a new school building for white children. When the new South Park School opened in 1947, Black children were refused admission and required to keep attending the dilapidated Walker school. Black parents were furious. They boycotted Walker and hired two teachers (Corinthian Nutter and Hazel McCray Weddington) to teach the children in private homes. Black parents also filed a suit against the South Park School District. The Kansas Supreme Court found that Walker was lacking in teacher qualification, facilities, class sizes, and sanitation.  They ruled that the district could maintain separate schools, but they had to be comparable. In this case, they were not, so the Black students, and all students in District No. 90, had to be allowed to attend the South Park District School. [204 words]
