The Mendez family moved to Westminster in 1943. Sylvia's father, Gonzalo, asked his sister, Sally, to enroll his children along with her children. Her children were admitted, but Gonzalo's were not. Since they lived in a white district, they should be admitted, but he was told Mexican children had to go to the Mexican schools. They set up a test case in every district and filed a lawsuit. The case was won at first, then the school board appealed. The case's ruling stayed the same. They say the students were caucasian, but discriminated against because of their latin origin. Governor Earl Warren desegregated California after the trial, 8 months before Brown v. Board.
